A lot has happened in the vineyard over the last week. We replanted one of our Legacy blocks at the top of the vineyard, replacing the 45 year old own rooted Pommard with like Pommard on root stock. We hope to start to harvest those new plantings in the 2024 vintage. We also grafted Block 5 (on the east side of the vineyard) from the Swan selection of Pinot noir which we planted in 2014, to the Coury selection taken from the block I use for our Imprint whole cluster Pinot noir. We were originally excited about the Swan, but it never managed to yield enough. Unlike with planting new vines, we won’t have to wait several years for fruit. Because the graft is on a fully developed root system, we will get fruit this year or next. Grafting is a skill that very few do well but fortunately we had some of the best professionals on the West Coast taking care of us. Here’s a little video of the process. More later…
