Business as a Force for Climate Action

May 27, 2020 | Vintage Journal

So, I will admit I’m freaking out a bit more about Climate Change these days more than usual (and I was already freaking out quite a lot).  Rolling Stone Magazine recently dedicated an entire issue to the topic, and honestly, if we don’t do something FAST, we’re in deep trouble.  Like end of the species level trouble.  I feel slightly better today because I learned that the wine storage and shipping company we work with, WineShipping.com, is offsetting 100% of the carbon resulting from our shipping through FedEx and UPS (Kudos to all three companies).  To give you a sense of what a big deal this is, last year I did a modestly decent calculation of Winderlea’s carbon footprint and shipping accounts for about 57%.  This is true for most wineries, so multiply the impact by all the wineries on the West Coast that use these companies and it is a big deal.  Now, I’m not implying that buying offsets relieves us of our obligation to reduce our carbon footprint by as much as we can, but things just got the tiniest bit better. -Bill Sweat, Proprietor
